What Shelving Do I Put In My Shower?

I get asked this all the time. We have so many options these days but whats the best and the worst?

The answer is not quite as simple. The size, type or location of the shower will determine what you can have.

Let’s start with the classics

Now I am not knocking the classic. A tile soap dish can be great if you are looking to do a more traditional or Federation bathroom it can easier to keep clean and stay away from rust or discoloration longer. However, the biggest downfall for me is the image below.

They almost always break. You have to remember a lot of these are family homes being used up to 15 times a day over a year we are talking thousands and thousands of times this is being used so whats the odds you don’t duck down and grab a fallen item and knock your head on the way up! it happened to me. Once they are broken they can be hard to replace and now you have a sharp instrument to deal with. My advice is to avoid when possible and it’s probably why we has really gone away from this type of design in the last 10 years especially in Perth.

Glass and Chrome

Probably the most popular options there have been hundreds of new designs in glass and chrome that have been designed for the new shower options. They come in some really creative designs some a bit more creative than functional but still give you great choice.

Soap Dishes

Really style is the main factor in all these choices, whether it’s black fittings, glass or chrome. Some drain better some not the chrome basket soap dishes generally drain better buts import to remember to keep it small. Only soap is going in them so try to keep it to a minimum to save knocking. Over the last few years, there has been a move away from the physical soap bars so dishes have become less common

Shelves

Shelving is in. With the higher use of bottles, we all need longer and larger areas to put them. As the soap dishes, you get these in all color and shades. You can get tied but look at it this way the less part the easier to keep clean. Corner shelves are great for keeping out of the way you will always generally need two. In most of the bathroom renovations we do in Perth we go with the double his and hers style. It’s important to note that some might have parts that rust so always double check the shelf is waterproof.

Brick Work

Now brick work covers all of the following, nib walls, shower boxes/recess, and foot rest. The pros of brick work is people can’t break it and it feels some what more organic. The biggest and latest trend is the shower recess box which besides being a little work looks great and can be made into a feature. The only to remember is build it on an external wall or wall with double brick can’t be having a hole in the bedroom. The nib wall as covered many a time is great for that pesky area between shower and vanity. The last part the foot rest or seat are functions as they describe can be a little big and bulky but will serve a purpose.

Like all decisions take into mind your needs. Such as do i use soap or bottled? do I want to make my accessory a feature? and lastly, what will the kids break by accident. My motto on space is this if you have it you will fill it so keep that in mind.

Brighten up: A reading lamp the book lover will love

We already had a MAGNARP table lamp in the living room, but we were missing a reading lamp next to our couch. For a standing MAGNARP floor lamp, we didn’t have space. And the available other IKEA lamps were not for our taste. I already saw solutions with FRÄCK , so I decided to make my own wall mounted reading light, fused with MAGNARP.
